If you are using a larger protection device to protect a circuit from electrical overloads(the larger device being capable of passively handling more current), then typically you would use a 15-amp device as a minimum size when installing devices such as lights and appliances that use less power(which is why we have these devices)to provide circuit protection for those devices currently using less power and only a 30-amp size(exception being primarily for large electric devices such as water heaters and HVAC)to provide the necessary circuit protection for those devices.

Should a significant amperage circuit breaker benefit your electrical system? Not necessarily; this is the main source of confusion.

The most important question we need to answer is if an increased voltage circuit breaker (will be better) than a standard circuit breaker... and that answer is not guaranteed to be "yes".....

3. The actual application of using a circuit breaker with a higher amperage rating as compared to the existing circuits and the devices rated for lesser amperage is not warranted if all components in the installation meet the necessary amperage requirements. For example, if you have installed a new Cooktop that requires more amperes than your existing fifteen-amp circuit provides, you would also have to provide for the additional current needed to operate the new appliance, thereby requiring you to add a new circuit breaker rated at twenty amps rather than continue with the old fifteen-amp.

4. Legal and Accessibility Compliance: The size of a breaker is determined by both local and building codes (LCB). When upgrading a breaker, upgrading an existing breaker must remain within the confines of these restrictions to maintain both legality and safety.

How to Check a Circuit Breaker?

Knowing how well your circuit breaker is functioning will assist you in determining if an upgrade is necessary. Refer to the following guide for assistance with your status evaluation.
