MCB and RCD: Getting the Order Right

In low-voltage distribution, the question is not really which device is more important, but how each one fits into the protection strategy. An MCB protects a circuit against overload and short-circuit conditions, while an RCD detects earth leakage and disconnects the supply when dangerous current imbalance is present. Because they serve different purposes, the arrangement depends on the application and the panel design. In many installations, the devices are used together rather than as substitutes for one another.

A useful rule of thumb is that an RCD does not replace overcurrent protection. It is normally installed in series with an MCB or fuse, so both leakage protection and overcurrent protection are covered. In a lot of final-circuit layouts, the RCD sits upstream and the MCBs handle the individual outgoing circuits. In other cases, an RCBO combines both functions in one device, which simplifies the board and avoids separate coordination between two components for that circuit.

 

The key point is coordination. When protective devices are installed in series, selectivity matters, because the downstream device should clear the fault first whenever possible. That helps avoid unnecessary tripping and keeps the system more stable. So, it is better to look at the circuit load, fault level, and the level of protection required before deciding the final layout.

The better approach is to let the protection function lead the layout: overcurrent protection from the MCB, leakage protection from the RCD, and a combined RCBO where a more integrated solution is preferred. With the right coordination, the result is a safer, more reliable distribution system.
